Your Library Card

Your student ID card doubles up as your library card, so you are ready to borrow straight away!

What can I borrow?

Books and gamesYou can borrow the majority of the books, DVDs and games.

Special collection items, journals, reference books and pamphlets are restricted to Library use only.

You can borrow items on the ground floor of the Library at the self service machine, or at the first floor Helpdesk.

How many items can I borrow?

Undergraduates: (BA / BSc) students: 15 items

Postgraduate Students: 20 items

Staff: 20 items

External members: 4 items

How long can I borrow items for?

self-serviceBooks: 3 weeks plus 3 renewals

DVDs and games: 3 weeks plus 3 renewals

Short Loan items: 1 week plus 3 renewals

How do I manage my loans?

You can access your library account online or via the app to see:

  • Loans – see how much you have on loan, and when it’s due back
  • Overdues – shows what is overdue, and how much is owed. If possible, you can also renew items via the app or online.
  • Reservations – make reservations and check the status of reserved items.
  • Loan history – the online version also shows you what you’ve borrowed in the past – handy for bibliographies!

How do I renew items?

MyCirqa appTo renew items, you can use the Library app (MyCirqa), log into your library account, or contact us.

Please note: If someone reserves an item that you have out on loan, you won’t be able to renew it and will need to return it by the due date at the latest.

Can I reserve items?

Only books that are currently out on loan to someone else can be reserved, so first check that the book ‘status’ says ‘on loan’:screenshot of item status on loan

  • Click on ‘Reservation Options’
  • You will be taken through to the catalogue record for the book where you can click on the ‘Reserve’ button:

You can check the status of items that you have reserved by logging into your library account, or via the Library app.

When the item is ready for you to collect, we will send an email to your student account.

Items that are ready to collect are held at the helpdesk (on the first floor of the Library) for 7 days.

Please note: You can only reserve items that are out “on loan”. If the status is “available”, it means the item is on the shelves and cannot be reserved.

Are there fines for items returned late?

No – we don’t charge fines for overdue items.

However, we will temporarily block your account when you have overdue items, which means you cannot borrow anything new until you have renewed or returned your overdue items. Renewing is easy – see above. If you have any problems with returning items for whatever reason, please get in touch.

To keep on top of your loans check your student email account on a regular basis for reminders – you can also use the Library app to keep track of your loans.

What do I do if I think I’ve lost an item on loan to me? 

You are responsible for all the Library items that you borrow – you are expected to return items on time and to look after items in your care.

If you lose an item from the Library you will be charged the costs to replace it – please be aware that this can be a considerable expense.

Please contact the Library as soon as possible if you think you may have lost an item, and we will do what we can to help you.
